Mon Sep 5, 2005 5:12 AM ET
* Rescue teams scour flooded streets and homes of New Orleans for the dead after clearing the Superdome football stadium and the convention centre of thousands sheltered there.
* Coast Guard helicopters hovering over devastated neighbourhoods pluck survivors from the roofs of submerged homes.
* President George W. Bush plans to visit relief efforts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Poplarville, Mississippi, -- his second trip to the devastated region in less than a week.
* His administration, criticized heavily for its slow response to the flooding, sent top officials to the disaster zone on Sunday and pledged to do whatever it took to clean up New Orleans and help its evacuees.
* Local officials believe thousands remain in the once-vibrant city despite mass evacuations before and after Katrina struck the U.S. Gulf Coast last Monday, hammering an area the size of Britain in one of the biggest natural disasters in American history.
* Authorities say Louisiana's official death toll of 59 could rise into the thousands. Well over 100 deaths have been confirmed in Mississippi, with many people unaccounted for.
* Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he is seeking to airlift some refugees to other states such as Utah, Michigan, Iowa and New York.
* U.S. troops have begun moving emergency supplies to the city and establishing order to halt looting and violence there. President Bush has ordered thousands more troops to New Orleans, which would bring the total committed to the effort to 54,000.
* The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it is making progress toward pumping out the city but still expects it will take 80 days or more to complete the job.
* The European Union and NATO say they have received official requests from the United States to provide first aid kits, blankets, water trucks and 500,000 prepared meals.
* South Korea and Australia voice frustration that U.S. relief efforts have prevented them from rescuing their citizens.
