HOUSTON - The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department in conjunction with the City Wide Club are collecting food and clothing to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Residents may place nonperishable food, clothes and toiletries in a grocery bag at the curb on their garbage day between Sept. 6 and 9 for pickup. Donations also may be dropped off at eight area locations.
HOUSTON - Chambers of commerce accept donations: The Greater Southwest Houston Chamber of Commerce, Intown Chamber of Commerce and Galleria Chamber are accepting donations for the hurricane victims. All three chambers are accepting men and women's clothing, baby supplies, pet supplies, canned food, bottled water and blankets.

They are collecting: Paper goods, diapers, cleaning supplies, plastic bottles of water, single-serve nonperishable snacks, peanut butter, canned food and other nonperishable food. HOUSTON - Harris County Citizen Corps is organizing the volunteer effort at the Reliant Astrodome. Volunteers should be able-bodied people who can walk three flights of stairs. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Shifts last 4 to 8 hours, and standard shift times are as follows: 6 a.m.-10 a.m. or 2 p.m.; 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. or 10 p.m.; and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Its recommended that volunteers wear comfortable shoes, bring a bottle of water, and avoid taking their purses. Volunteers should go to the McNee Street parking lot just north of Reliant Stadium between Kirby and Fannin. They should use the west entrance, so-called because it is on the west side of Reliant Center. If met by a guard, volunteers should identify themselves as being with Harris County Citizen Corps.Volunteers should come to the second floor of Reliant Center and ask for the volunteer coordinator. HOUSTON - Catholic Charities is providing assistance to displaced persons by getting them to shelters immediately. For those in transit from the disaster area (i.e., traveling to stay with relatives, etc.) Catholic Charities is assisting families with one or two nights' stay and providing them funds for food, gas, or transportation to their destination.
