AUSTIN AND SAN ANTONIO - FEMA has set up a hot line for Hurricane Katrina refugees looking for shelter. The number is 888-312-4567. People looking to volunteer also may call to get assignments. The service is a joint effort of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Texas radio markets. Calls will be answered by 26 information and referral agencies.

AUSTIN – Refugees need basics like underwear and socks. City officials asked that those items be dropped off at the city's Contribution Center at Motorola, 3501 Ed Bluestein Blvd.

 

AUSTIN – Red Cross - Red Cross asks that all donated items for hurricane evacuees be taken to the local Red Cross collection station located at 2218 Pershing Road, near Mueller Airport. The telephone number is (512) 929-1224.

SAN ANTONIO - The Jewish Family and Children's Service is collecting clothing (preferably on hangers) and non-perishable food items. SAN ANTONIO - Girls & Boys Town of San Antonio at 503 Urban Loop is accepting donations for the 50 kids from New Orleans it is caring for. The children range in age from 10 to 17. Some have special needs, and most have not heard from their families. They need sleeping shorts for boys, pajamas for girls, flip-flops, swimsuits for a special day donated by Splashtown, hygiene products, two portable air-conditioning units, cleaning supplies, bottled water, juice, phone cards and store gift certificates. SAN ANTONIO - Rivercenter Mall is collecting supplies for the Salvation Army at the Security Office, located on the river level behind Starbucks and the food court. Donations needed are non-perishable food items, toiletries and hygiene products, baby wipes, baby powder, diapers, linens and towels, and first-aid items. Hours of drop-off are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

AUSTIN - The Salvation Army is requesting personal hygiene items for men, women and children as well as non-perishable food items that do not require refrigeration, heating or a can opener, baby items (such as formula, wipes, lotion, ointments and diapers), insect repellent, flashlights with batteries, work and/or plastic gloves and new clothing (socks, underwear and clothes for school-aged children).

AUSTIN - Jewish Community Association of Austin — Is accepting new or gently used clothing, staples such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers and nonperishable food items. SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Food Bank and H.E. Butt Grocery Co. are accepting donations of relief supplies. Donations can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the following H-E-B supermarkets: Olmos Drive at San Pedro, 6580 FM 78 at Foster Road, 7010 S. Zarzamora at S.W. Military Drive, 9900 Wurzbach Road at Interstate 10, U.S. 281 North and Loop 1604. Items needed are paper goods, plates, cups, diapers, tissue, cleaning supplies, water (no glass containers), single-serving snacks, peanut butter, heat-and-eat foods (chili, stew, canned pasta with sauce), MREs, baby formula, Ensure or other meal replacement drinks. Items can be dropped off at the downtown facility at 510 East Eighth Street, which is open 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. seven days a week.  Clothing should be dropped off at a Salvation Army Family Store

AUSTIN DONATIONS - The Austin Bar Association and the Austin Young Lawyers Association have formed a relief committee to coordinate its efforts. The committee will collect donations (that will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $275,000 by Compass Bank), organize a clothing drive, provide office space for displaced attorneys and provide attorney for legal clinics to help victims in Houston.

AUSTIN FUNDRAISER – Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon Inc. — Sullivan's Steakhouse and Texas Land & Cattle restaurants in Austin will donate 100 percent of their Labor Day sales to the American Red Cross. AUSTIN - Katrina Help Austin is "Families Helping Families" - KatrinaHelpAustin.org is a grassroots organization coordinating a database of Austin-area residents and volunteers for Hurrican Katria evacuees.  The primary mission is to match evacuees with families in the greater Austin area.

AUSTIN – City officials request that you DO NOT come to the Convention Center.  Instead go to the Red Cross office at 2218 Pershing Drive (off Martin Luther King Blvd. just east of Airport Boulevard) or call 211 to volunteer.

AUSTINEnchanted Forest needs volunteers. The wonderful site is located at 1404 W. Oltorf, camping site for refugees.

NEW BRAUNFELS - Rev. Charles Stark of the United Church of Christ opened the Slumber Falls Camp and Retreat Center in New Braunfels to accommodate nearly 30 members of a New Orleans family who had been staying with a family in Round Rock.
