Veterans for Peace and Camp Casey Crawford have established a Camp CaseyCovington, LA to help Louisiana refugees from Hurricane Katrina.  The project is receiving support from Veterans for Peace – Texas and Veterans for Peace – Mendocino County, CA.

CURRENT NEWS: we have been notified that the special needs shelter is over flowing. We will be having infants arriving. There is currently a request for pediatic nurses, and pediatricians

NEWS FROM 09/04/05: Daryl and I arrived in Covington on Sunday evening. There is still a need for volunteers here. People are still being bussed out of NO and are in shock and many need medical care, which is not available. The hospital is only taking patients on life support. There is special needs shelter but they will only take people who need electric medical supplies. they are many sick people here. We have been working nonstop providing care to evacuees with dementia, brain injury, premature labor, autism, cystic fibrosis, incontinence, congestive heart failure. This is all taking place on the floor of a school cafeteria w/ almost no medical supplies. Sanitation is marginal, to put it politely.

NEWS FROM 9/02/05: There is no government here! The Louisiana National Guard is not here.  Only we (VFP) are here and the people of this community are in distress.

NEEDS:  WATER, Ice chests with ice, baby supplies (diapers, formula, ointments), powdered milk, canned foods, fresh fruit, gasoline, flashlights, flat sheets pillows, air mattresses, cots, wash cloths, towels, blankets, pump hand sanitizer (hospital grade, if possible), vinyl exam gloves, zinc oxide ointment, chucks- flat disposable absorbant pads, pump hand soap, laundry detergent, gatorade, pedialyte, baby food, children's books and toys.

ALSO NEEDED: Trucks to help transport, volunteer drivers and gas.  Donations are being collected in Austin, Dallas, and Houston and around the US as well.  Get Your Act On (Waco and Austin area) is helping collect money and arrange for transporation.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We have limited power, but we have more generators on the way. We have access to bathrooms with portable Johns coming. We have real cooking facilities and shower (1). We have wireless Internet access with more one the way. We have some cell phone service and it is improving. Do We have you?
